Being a volunteer firefighter and EMT was extremely rewarding as well as demanding. The constant training, teamwork, readiness, competition and command hierarchy becomes a big part of your life. Firefighters are very professional when it comes to responding to needs while they can be quite unusual characters when not on call. There can be a strong need to blow off steam both physical and psychological.
I was a volunteer firefighter when 911 hit and experienced that trauma differently because that role, it’s hard to talk about. If you choose to join, be ready to feel a wide range of emotions while maintaining a professional demeanor as training and adrenalin kick in when responding to alarms. There are many roles in the service, ranging from logistical desk work to technical dive rescue. A wide range of skills are appreciated. You don’t necessarily have to be in the firefighting role with the bigger departments.
